A Letter to All Parents
Now has come the time to open the door and allow your children to begin their journey to adulthood. Although they may be filled with excitement and a sense of adventure, you may be filled with anxiety and a sense of loss—they are, after all, your most precious gifts. Yet, mingled with those anxious feelings is a sense of PRIDE.
As a parent, you should take pride in child's journey. The life lessons you have taught them over the years, the example you have set for him or her—these little moments will begin to fall into place as your child ventures out into the world. You will be surprised how quickly lessons learned in the past serve them well now.
The college, vocational school, or another avenue of training that your child has chosen will be au'-dah he (very good) experience for them—even when they forget the essay that was due or run out of grocery money before payday. Their educational experiences not only help them to create a fulfilling career, but these experiences help to enrich their lives socially and globally. Students learn much more than "book stuff." They learn practical, social, and living skills. These are the skills that will help your child to put that "book stuff" to work for them, whatever they may choose to do.
There is so much to do to help your child prepare for their journey—from FAFSA forms to college visits to scholarships and everything in between. You don't have to go it alone! Both the Department of Higher Education and the Quapaw Tribe are here to support you and do what we can to help you. From the day you move them into the dorms until the day they walk across the stage with a diploma in hand and beyond, we are here to assist you.
The Quapaw Tribe of Oklahoma Department of Higher Education has standards and regulations that must be applied consistently to each student. It is understood that parents support these procedures and appreciate their purpose, value, and integrity.
Enjoy helping your child along their journey… Now, go open that door!
With excitement and looking toward the future,
Director of Higher Education
